Glucophage SR is the brand name for the drug metformin. It is a sustained-release formulation, meaning it is absorbed slowly into the bloodstream and has a long-lasting effect. It is most commonly prescribed for type 2 diabetes but is also sometimes prescribed “off-label” to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This does not mean the drug is unsafe, just that pharmaceutical companies have not expanded its approval to include PCOS and diabetes.

How does Glucophage SR work?
One of the main causes of PCOS is insulin resistance. Glucophage SR helps improve the body’s sensitivity to produced insulin, thereby reducing glucose production. This also helps treat PCOS, reduce symptoms, and improve fertility. Glucophage SR is a sustained-release medication, so you only need to take one tablet once or twice a day. The sustained-release medication helps reduce the number of tablets you need to take each day.
How is Glucophage SR taken?
Glucophage SR is a tablet that is swallowed with a small amount of water. It is often taken with a meal to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects. Glucophage SR Dosage
The usual starting dose of Glucophage SR is 500 mg once daily. This can be slowly increased depending on your response.
