What is metformin?

How does metformin work?

is the metformin dosage?

The usual starting dose is 500 mg once daily for 1-2 weeks. If no side effects occur or side effects subside, the dose can be increased to 500 mg twice daily.

If needed, the metformin dose may eventually be increased to 500 mg three times daily. In some cases, the metformin dose may be increased even further. If side effects occur, your doctor may start you on a slower schedule so that your metformin dose can be increased more easily.

Does Metformin Have Side Effects?

Like all medications, metformin can have some side effects. The most common side effects are:

• Nausea
• Flatulence
• Stomach pain
• Flatulence.

These side effects may go away in a week or two, but if they persist or are bothersome, you should consult your doctor for further advice. Rarely, metformin can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If this happens, your doctor may need to reduce your metformin dose for a while.
Severe allergic reactions occur very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) such as shortness of breath, or swelling of the lips or tongue, call 999 immediately.

What warnings are associated with metformin?

Metformin is not suitable for everyone. You should tell your doctor if:

• you have kidney failure
• you have severe liver disease
• Do you have heart failure or have recently had a heart attack
• you are an alcoholic or consume more than 14 units of alcohol per week
• you have lung disease
• you are already pregnant or breastfeeding.

Some medicines may interact with metformin. You may be told that metformin is not suitable for you if you are already taking the following medicines:

• medicines for heart disease or high blood pressure
• medicines for kidney disease
• diuretics (“water tablets”)
• anti-inflammatory medicines
• some steroid medicines
• certain antibiotics
• medicines for indigestion or stomach ulcers.
