How does Mefenamic Acid work?
Prostaglandins are produced in the body, but they cause pain and inflammation at the site of injury or damage. Mefenamic acid prevents the production of prostaglandins by blocking the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme. Thus, when you take mefenamic acid, the biological pathway that causes pain and swelling is blocked. Prostaglandins can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and menstrual pain. Mefenamic acid reduces the amount of prostaglandins produced in the uterine lining, making periods easier and less painful.
How is Mefenamic Acid taken?
Mefenamic acid comes in tablets and should be swallowed with a small amount of water. It should be taken during or after meals to reduce the risk of stomach irritation and the formation of stomach ulcers. Mefenamic acid dosage
Each tablet contains 500 mg of mefenamic acid. The usual dose is one tablet three times a day.
If you have period pain, you should start taking mefenamic acid from the first day of bleeding and reduce the dose as the cramps and heavy bleeding subside.
Are there any side effects?
Like all medicines, mefenamic acid can cause some side effects. The most common side effects are:
- Digestive problems such as indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal pain and heartburn
- Nausea or vomiting (feeling sick or vomiting)
- Changes in blood cells in a blood test
- Allergic reactions such as a skin rash
- Mouth sores.
These side effects are likely to go away, but if they persist or are bothersome, contact your doctor for further advice.
Severe allergic reactions occur very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction such as shortness of breath, swollen lips, or swollen tongue (anaphylaxis), call 999 immediately.
